Naturalistic Photographic Art Prints

Hello, my name is Nickola Beck, I specialise in contemporary botanical, naturalistic photography and run my business Basjoo Art Prints, from my Online Shop and Studio-Gallery in Nottingham.

I completed my B.A(Hons) in Graphic Design & Photography with first class honours at Derby University in 1994 and worked as freelance graphic designer around the East Midlands, I then went on to establish my own business designing wedding stationery but I now focus purely on photography and design.

The inspiration for my work comes from my passion of tropical plant gardening and the natural world around us. I named Basjoo Art Prints after a Japanese Banana ‘Musa Basjoo,’ (pronounced ‘bazshoe’) which grow amongst many other interesting monsters in our tropical garden!

I enjoy travelling around with my camera trying to capture beautiful imagery often found in the most unusual and unsuspecting places! I am completely fascinated and excited by the unusual abstracts of light, colour, shape and texture that are unveiled when enlarging botanical images. I particularly love the beautiful ‘jewel like’ quality and out of focus effects created by natural sunlight through leaves, trees and water droplets on petals, fabulous!

I choose not to use any post production, additional lighting or trickery, preferring the use of photographic techniques with natural light, particularly over-exposure and the sometimes utopian quality it creates whilst keeping the image real and faithful.
